William Eipel was one of the top field athletes for the track and field program. He competed in the discus, high jump, shot put, javelin and broad jump events. Eipel won the IC4A indoor High Jump Championships, and four Metropolitan High Jump and Javelin titles. He was also credited with developing the belly roll, now known as the straddle, in 1936. Eipel would go on to place fifth at the 1945 United States National Championships in the javelin with a throw of 172-1.
