Manhattan University Athletic Hall of Fame
A three-time All-MAAC First Team selection and one of the top hitters in program history, Nick Derba joins the Manhattan College Athletic Hall of Fame as part of the class of 2019. During his time in Riverdale, Derba finished with 212 hits, a then school-record 172 runs, 26 home runs and 129 RBI while helping lead Manhattan to 121 wins over four years, before being drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals in the 2007 MLB First-Year Player Draft. A three-time captain and MAAC All-Academic selection, Derba helped lead the program to the first MAAC Baseball Championship in school history as a junior in 2006, and a spot in the Lincoln Regional. Against top-seed Nebraska, he was behind the plate for the Jaspers' rousing 4-1 win and drove in a run, before helping Manhattan to a victory over San Francisco, to secure a second-place finish in the regional. Derba made an immediate impact as a rookie, starting 51 games while batting .303 with four home runs and 30 RBI as a freshman in 2004, before hitting .271 with eight home runs and 35 RBI as a sophomore. He then broke out in the Jaspers' aforementioned storybook season of 2006, Derba had a breakout year in his third season in Riverdale, batting .304 with three home runs and 34 RBI while playing in all 57 games. Even more impressive, was the fact he started all but one of those games behind the plate while posting a fielding percentage of .989. After playing in the Cape Cod League in the summer before his senior season, he hit .281 with 12 doubles, 11 home runs and 30 RBI in 2007. Derba graduated with a degree in biology, before playing six years in the Cardinals' organization, and served as an assistant on Manhattan's 2012 MAAC Championship team. Derba, who currently serves as the University of Maine Head Baseball Coach, and his wife Megan are the proud parents of Benjamin Levi Derba.
