Brother Jasper, a native of Ireland, was Manhattan College's first-ever Athletic Director and Baseball Coach, and his last name bears the college's nickname to this day. Brother Jasper came to Manhattan College in 1861 as the head of resident students, and founded the school's first band, orchestra, glee club and various literary clubs in addition to becoming athletic director. One of his greatest achievements was bringing the then little-known sport of baseball to Manhattan, while also serving as the team's coach. During this time he is credited with creating the "Seventh-Inning Stretch," on particularly warm and humid day when Manhattan was playing a semi-pro baseball team called the Metropolitans. Brother Jasper noticed the Manhattan students were becoming restless and edgy and as they came to bath in the seventh inning of a close game, he called time-out and told the students to stand up and stretch for a few minutes until the game resumed. From this, the "Seventh-Inning Stretch" as we know it was born.
