Brian Kivlan was one of the greatest distance runners in the storied history of the track and field program. A three-time All-American, he established outdoor records in the 1500 (3:40.3) and the mile (3:57.4). He earned his first All-American citation at the 1967 NCAA Indoor Championships as a member of the two-mile relay team, that placed third with a mark of 7:31. At the 1968 NCAA Outdoor Championships, Kivlan took third in the 1500 with a time of 3:40.3.in earning his second All-American honor. The following fall, he secured his third All-American accolade at the 1968 NCAA University Division Cross Country Championships at Van Cortlandt Park.
