George Sheehan was a top performer for the track and field program. He was a member of the Jaspers' 1939 IC4A Indoor Championship team, and was the 1940 Junior National AAU indoor mile champion. He renewed his interest in running at age 45, and five years later ran a 4:47 mile, which was the world's first sub-five-minute time by a 50-year-old. He would go to set the national indoor 70 and over 1500-meter record in 1989. He also was the medical editor for Runner's World, and wrote eight books, "Running & Being: The Total Experience," which became a New York Times best seller. Additionally, he served as a consultant to the President's Council on Physical Fitness.
