Tom Murphy was a standout performer for both the cross country and track and field programs during his time in Riverdale. Murphy concluded his standout career at Manhattan by finishing second in the 880 yards (1:49.4) and in the process earning All-American honors at the 1958 NCAA Outdoor Championships. He would then go on to win the 800 meters at the 1959 Pan American games in Chicago, before representing the United States at the 1960 Rome Olympics. He would also competed in the first-ever United States-USSR dual meet.
