Adrien Awana (Bordeaux, France / University of Bordeaux) was selected as one of 30 candidates for 2019 Men's Soccer Senior CLASS® Award.
To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence: community, classroom, character and competition.
An acronym for
Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School ® the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.
On the field, Awana is a 2018 All-MAAC first team selection who was second on the team a year ago with four goals, including the game winner over No. 25 Fordham. He also headlined a defense the set a program record by allowing just 12 goals in 18 matches in 2018. This season, Awana was an All-MAAC preseason selection.
In the classroom, Awana is a management major at Manhattan that finished his first year in Riverdale with a 3.67 GPA, including a 3.87 mark in the spring semester.
In the community, Awana participated St. Baldrick's fundraiser and the Relay for Life to raise money for the fight against cancer. Awana and the men's soccer team also helped in community with clean-ups in spring.
From the list of 30 candidates, a committee will select ten finalists for the 2019 Senior CLASS Award. Those 10 names will then be placed on the official ballot for a nationwide vote. Fan balloting will be coupled with votes from coaches and media to determine the recipient of the award.
The Senior CLASS Award winners will be announced during the 2019 NCAA Men's and Women's College Cup® championships in December.
The Senior CLASS Awards were founded in 2001 and started handing out the Senior CLASS Award to men's soccer in 2007. Andre Shinyashiki from Denver won the 2018 Senior CLASS Award.
