RIVERDALE, NY – The Manhattan volleyball team fell in straight sets in this weekends home match to Niagara (25-10, 25-20, 25-19).
Manhattan (1-13) had a rough start to the match in set one but was able to pick it up in sets two and three, tightening up the score and making team fight for the lead in each set.
Set two opened with the a kill by
Kelly Markowski to give the Jaspers an early lead. The first half of the set was extremely close, with the score being tied up 4 separate times. As the set went on Niagara was able to build a seven point lead against the Jaspers which can be accredited to their fantastic defense. Manhattan began to rally when they went on two back to back three point spurts, the second one kicked off by a Markowski kill, brining the score to (19-17). It remained a two point game for the remainder of the set with each team trading kills until it reached a final score of (25-20).
The third set also started well for the Jaspers with
Sarah Emmons kicking off the set with a service ace. The service ace would be the beginning of a three point run putting the Jaspers up (3-0). Later, the Purple Eagles would go on a seven point run to grab an 8-4 lead. However, this did not stop Manhattan from bringing it back to five point game towards the end.
This afternoon's match had an outstanding performance form
Camila Gomez, who had 7 kills and 11 digs in her return to the lineup. Another leader of the match was
Julia Menocal, who also had 7 kills wand 13 digs of her own.
Tomorrow the Jaspers will play their final home match until October 15
th. The Jaspers will be playing Canisius on Sunday October 2
nd at 1 P.M. in Draddy Gymnasium.
