Edison, NJ – Thanks to his heroics on both sides of the ball last week, junior defender
Adrien Awana (Bordeaux, France / University of Bordeaux) was chosen as the MAAC Defensive Player of the Week for September 24, the conference announced Monday afternoon.
It is Awana's first career Player of the Week honor and the third Defensive Player of the Week for Manhattan this season. Goalkeeper
Marcellin Gohier has won twice this season, including last week.
On September 18 against #25 Fordham, Awana shocked the Rams with a header off a corner kick that zoomed past the goalie in the 90th minute, as Manhattan pulled off the Battle of the Bronx upset 1-0 at Gaelic Park. Defensively, he disrupted Fordham's offense on 10 occasions where he won a 50/50 ball or initiated a successful clear.
The goal adds to what has been a stellar September for the first-year Jasper. The France native is tied for the team lead with four goals, all of which have come in the last five games. All four scores have come off set pieces and three have been game-winning strikes.
The 7-1 Jaspers begin MAAC play on Wednesday, September 26 when they visit Monmouth for a 7:00 pm tilt. Manhattan then welcomes Saint Peter's to Riverdale on Saturday, September 29 at 6:00 pm for the MAAC home opener.
