Riverhead, N.Y. -- Thomas Romano shot an even par 73 to lead the Manhattan College golf team to a second place finish in the inaugural Jasper Classic held Friday at the Cherry Creek Golf Club in Riverhead, N.Y. Farmingdale State won the tournament with a team score of 303, nine strokes ahead of Manhattan, which shot a 312. Saint Peter's finished third at 314.
Romano placed second overall individually, four strokes behind Farmingdale's Masa Maruyama.
"This was a great event held on a very tough, long course," said Manhattan College golf coach Walter Olsewski. The Cherry Creek course is a par 73, 7187 yard layout.
In addition to Romano's 73, also scoring for Manhattan Friday were: Nicholas LaBanca, who shot a 79 to tie for seventh; Matt Baney and Rob Kehoe, who both shot 80 to tie for eighth and Matt Creamer, who posted an 81 to tie for ninth.
Separately Friday at Cherry Creek, a second Manhattan squad lost to Hofstra in a dual match 325-335. Scoring for Manhattan were: Pat Bibaud (79), Louis Perry (82),Chris Critelli (86), Jon Wilson (88) and Anthony DeMartino (90).
