RIVERDALE, N.Y. - After leading the Manhattan College volleyball team to wins over Fairleigh Dickinson, Marist and Siena last week, junior middle blocker LaKell Havens (St. George, Utah) has been named Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Defensive Player of the Week, the conference office announced on Monday. Havens averaged 1.50 blocks and 2.92 kills per set while hitting .351 in the three victories.
In the Lady Jaspers' three-set win at Fairleigh Dickinson on Wednesday night, Havens registered eight blocks, including three solo stuffs. She also had 12 kills and hit .360 in the match while adding an assist and two service aces. Then in the 3-1 triumph over MAAC rival Marist on Saturday, Havens registered 13 kills on .435 hitting to go along with four blocks, two aces and an assist. Havens wrapped up her week with six blocks and 10 kills in the Lady Jaspers' five-set victory over Siena on Sunday. She hit .276 and added a pair of aces, as Manhattan completed the first season sweep of Siena in program history.
Havens currently paces the squad with 62 blocks and 0.82 blocks per set. She also leads the Lady Jaspers with a .260 hitting percentage and ranks third on the team with 2.61 kills per set. Havens is the first Manhattan player to take home MAAC weekly honors this season, and the first since Rita Welsh was named MAAC Defensive Player of the Week twice last season (Sept. 14, Oct. 5).
The Lady Jaspers, who are currently in a three-way tie for fifth place in the MAAC standings, conclude their home schedule with a pair of MAAC contests this weekend. Fairfield (10-16, 9-5 MAAC) visits Draddy Gymnasium at 3 p.m. on Saturday, then Rider (2-22, 1-13 MAAC) comes to town for a 2 p.m. Senior Day matchup on Sunday.
