Katie Plummer Named Assistant Volleyball Coach

RIVERDALE, N.Y. ? Manhattan College volleyball coach Jolie Ward completed her coaching staff today with the announcement that Katie Plummer has been hired as an assistant coach.  A 2005 graduate of Mercer University, Plummer is one of two players in school history with 1,000 kills and 1,000 digs.  She is the Bears' all-time leader with 1,390 kills and ranks second with 1,639 digs.

"Katie comes with diverse coaching experience, including a recent position as a high school varsity boys' coach in Florida," Ward said.  "She brings creativity, energy and enthusiasm to the program.  Her overall positive outlook is a welcome addition to Manhattan Volleyball.  I am looking forward to working with her and benefitting from all she has to offer the Lady Jaspers."

Plummer was a four-year starter at Mercer and was named team MVP each season.  Mercer's 2004-05 Female Athlete of the Year, she earned Atlantic Sun Freshman of the Year honors in 2001 and was chosen second team All-Atlantic Sun as a senior.  In addition, Plummer was a four-time academic all-conference selection and a six-time Atlantic Sun Player of the Week.

Plummer began her coaching career at Berry College in 2005.  She helped guide the Vikings to back-to-back 30-win campaigns during her two seasons.  In 2007, she became the head coach at Palm Beach Gardens High School in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.  Plummer was responsible for all aspects of the team, which reached the FHSAA 6A district finals last season.  She has also worked numerous volleyball camps dating back to the summer of 2001.

“This is a wonderful opportunity,” she said.  “I can't wait to start working with Coach Ward and the Manhattan volleyball program.”

The Lady Jaspers open the 2008 season with a matchup at Temple on Aug. 29.  Manhattan's home opener will be against Lafayette on Sept. 17.
