PORTLAND, Ore. ? Kelly Regan (Williamsville, N.Y.) recorded her second consecutive double-double with 18 points and a career-high-tying 10 rebounds and Lindsey Loutsenhizer (North Huntingdon, Pa.) tied her career-high with 14 points, but Laiken Dollente had 22 of her game-high 25 points in the second half to lead Portland (5-6) to an 84-66 victory over the Manhattan College women's basketball team (4-7) at the Chiles Center on Friday night.
Portland scored the first four points of the game before the Lady Jaspers rallied to force a 7-7 tie. After Karlie Burris drained a free throw to Portland in front 18-17, a layup by Michelle Pacheco (Bronx, N.Y.) ignited a 15-4 Manhattan run over the next five minutes to give the Lady Jaspers a 32-22 advantage with 4:03 remaining in the half. The lead reached 12 points at halftime when Loutsenhizer sank a trey to make it 38-26.
After Regan opened the second half by hitting a jumper to increase Manhattan's advantage to 14 points, the Pilots drained three-pointers on their next three possessions, countered only by an Alyssa Herrington (Cambridge, N.Y.) jumper, to trim the lead to seven, 42-35. The Pilots pulled within three before Regan scored eight points in a little over two minutes to bring the Lady Jaspers' lead back to eight, 54-46, with 13:48 remaining.
A Dollente layup on Portland's next possession ignited a 9-3 Pilots run that tied the game at 57-57 with 8:10 left to play. The Lady Jaspers had problems with Portland's full-court press the entire second half, and on the next Manhattan possession, Dollente stole the inbounds pass and was fouled. She sank both free throws to put the Pilots in front, 59-57. Portland never looked back from their and pulled away to an 84-66 victory. The Pilots shot 61.3 percent (19-of-31) from the field and 71.4 percent (5-of-7) from three-point range while outscoring the Lady Jaspers 58-28 in the second half.
Pacheco had a career-high seven steals and tied her career-best with seven assists to go along with 13 points. Abby Wentworth (Portland, Maine) registered seven points, six rebounds and a career-high five assists. Loutsenhizer also grabbed six boards. Nicole Harrison (Falls Church, Va.) chipped in eight points and three steals off the bench. Manhattan forced 20 Portland turnovers and swiped a season-high 16 steals. As a team, the Lady Jaspers shot 41.3 percent (26-of-63) from the floor, including 23.1 percent (3-of-13) from behind the arc, and 84.7 percent (11-of-17) at the line.
Dollente finished one assist shy of a double-double for the Pilots, distributing nine assists while adding four rebounds and two steals. Allyson Sievers tallied 16 points, nine boards and four assists for Portland, while Tara Cronin chipped in nine points. Burris had five assists and four steals to go along with eight points, while Carly Koebel registered seven points, four assists and five blocks off the bench. The Pilots shot 51.7 percent (30-of-58) from the field in the game, including 43.8 percent (7-of-16) from three-point land. Portland shot 70.8 percent (17-of-24) at the charity stripe and outrebounded Manhattan 37-32.
The Lady Jaspers conclude their two-game trip to the Beaver State with a visit to Portland State (6-4) on Sunday. Tip-off is set for 5:05 p.m. ET.
