Riverdale, N.Y. (November 3, 2006)-The Manhattan Men's Lacrosse program recently announced that
Tim Clancy,
Chris Oppito, and
Corey Dolik will serve as team captains for the upcoming 2007 season. The three players were selected by their peers to assume the leadership roles.
"All three of them have been contributors to the program since day one," said head coach
Tim McIntee, now in his tenth year at the helm of the program. "They have done everything asked of them in the classroom, on the lacrosse field, and in the weight room."
Clancy, a senior, has been a mainstay at defense for the past three years, playing in a total of 33 games during that span. The Floral Park, N.Y. (Floral Park) native played in 12 games for a defensive unit that allowed only 8.46 goals per game during the 2006 season, which was good enough for 24th in the NCAA scoring defense rankings. This season will be different than any other for Clancy, since he will be playing without defenseman Pat Farrelly, a team captain in 2005, alongside of him. Instead, Clancy will be looked upon to fill the void left by the graduation of Farrelly, who was an All-MAAC First Team selection last year.
Oppito, also a senior, has seen in action 37 games up to this point in his collegiate career. The midfielder from West Babylon, N.Y. (West Babylon) notched 10 points (7G, 3A) in 11 games last season. Although he did not receive honors last year, Oppito was an all-league performer as a sophomore, garnering 2005 All-MAAC Second Team honors.
The third captain, Dolik (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Detroit Jesuit), is the only junior of the group. Dolik, a junior defenseman, was a groundball machine in 2006 as he secured 59 loose balls en route to being named the MAAC Co-Defensive Player of the Year. Dolik, who was also named to the All-MAAC First Team, was a contributor during his freshman year as well. The Michigan native was only one of seven Jaspers to see action in all 14 of the team's games in 2005.
"I think our team picked three qualified individuals to lead our team during the 2007 campaign," added McIntee. "All three of them are determined to help us have a successful season, and all three possess the leadership qualities you want in your captains-discipline, hard work, hustle, and loyalty."
The three captains will lead their squad into a season-opening affair at the University of Delaware on February 24, 2007.
