EMMITTSBURG, MD – The Manhattan Jaspers Men's Lacrosse team (2-8, 0-4 MAAC) dropped a heartbreaker in overtime to the Mountaineers of Mount St. Mary's (MD) (2-8, 1-4 MAAC) by a score of 10-9 inside Waldron Family Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Jaspers responded quickly after the Mount posted the opening goal just 65 seconds in, with the equalizer coming from Thomas White 45 seconds after.
- Both teams would trade goals nearly ten minutes later, with Nick Henry scoring the second equalizer, before Henry and White logged back-to-back goals to jump into the second quarter in front.
- In the second stanza, Aiden Kane put the Green and White ahead by two off a Mount turnover, before the Mountaineers responded two minutes later to bring the lead down to one.
- Through the next seven minutes, both teams put together numerous attempts, highlighted by a pair of shots from Liam Peabody, but to no avail.
- The seventh goal for the Green and White came from Nick Henry on a man-up, before Thomas White added the eighth goal to the ledger.
- After the Mountaineers posted four consecutive goals to retake the lead in the third and fourth quarters, off a 30-second clock violation by the Mount, the Jaspers were able to clear, courtesy of Gavin Wolf's ground-ball, and eventually found Sean Shelko, who found the back of the net with 2.4 seconds to tie the game at nine and force overtime.
- Two minutes into the extra quarter, the Mountaineers were able to capitalize and find the back of the net for the winner off a second chance attempt and ground ball scoop.
STATS AND NOTES
- Leading the charge for the Green and White was freshman attack Nick Henry, who posted four goals, one assist on seven shots, with five on target. Henry picked up one ground ball and caused one turnover.
- Sophomore midfielder Thomas White added three goals on five shots on goal, while scooping two ground balls and one caused turnover.
- Redshirt junior attack Sean Shelko tallied the equalizer with 2.4 seconds remaining, adding an assist, three shots on goal, one on target, and two ground balls.
- Redshirt junior faceoff specialist Casey Klossner took control of 11 faceoffs, while picking up a team high of seven ground balls.
- Redshirt sophomore midfielder Aiden Kane scored one goal on two shots, with one on target.
- As a team, the Jaspers posted 17 saves, compared to eight for Mount St. Mary's.
- Additionally, the Green and White converted on two of three extra-man opportunities throughout the game.
