Poughkeepsie, NY (April 25, 2005)- Manhattan finished 1-3 in the Marist Spring Tournament this past weekend, convincingly defeating Wagner, and dropping hotly-contested battles to Army, Fordham and Marist.
In the first match, the Lady Jaspers could not get past a tough, disciplined Army team, dropping the first game 25-20, before their rally in the second game fell short as Manhattan dropped a 27-25 decision.
Manhattan bounced back and defeated Wagner, 25-12, 25-12 in the second match, prior to falling to Fordham in a match that was extended to three games. The first game was a back-and-forth affair, with the A-10 power pulling it out, 25-23. After Fordham won the second game, 25-15, the teams agreed to play a third game to 15, and Manhattan captured the third game, 19-17, in a game that featured several long rallies and a large amount of side outs.
After the marathon affair against Fordham, Manhattan played its final match of the day, taking on Marist and falling in two close games, 25-22, 25-23.
On the day,
Ashley Davis totaled 37 digs to lead the defense, while
Megan O'Dorisio led the team with 32 kills and a .323 hitting percentage, while
Ashley Watson added 24 kills on the day.
"Unfortunately this tournament was not as successful in the win/loss column as the first two, but we continued to improve in all areas of our game. I was most impressed by our blocking this weekend, with a total of 18 blocks in four matches. Between our digging and blocking, we are becoming a solid defensive team. We gave it all we had and left it on the court and that's all I can ask for," commented head coach Ray Green.
Manhattan will return to action at Wagner's Spring Tournament, taking place in Staten Island on Saturday, April 30.
