NWAFILI EARNS MAAC ROOKIE OF THE WEEK ACCOLADES

Edison, NJ (February 14, 2005)- For the second time this season, Manhattan freshman guard Joann Nwafili was named MAAC Rookie of the Week, it was announced today by the conference office. The freshman averaged 11.5 points and 3.5 rebounds during the past week, and scored a team-high 17 points in the Lady Jaspers' 66-56 comeback victory over St. Peter's on Saturday.

After scoring six points on Thursday against Fairfield, Nwafili totaled 14 of her 17 points in the second half against St. Peter's, including 11 points during a critical 26-8 stretch in the second half that gave Manhattan the lead for good. Against St. Peter's, Nwafili shot 7-12 from the field, including 2-4 from beyond the arc, to go along with five rebounds and three assists in a career-high 36 minutes of action, as Manhattan captured its sixth MAAC win of the season.

Nwafili's 17 points tied her career-high, set earlier this season in a win against Iona. The freshman is averaging 7.7 points per game, placing her fourth on the team, and 5.1 rebounds per game, good for second on the team, and second among MAAC freshmen.

Currently 10-13 and 6-8 in the MAAC, the Lady Jaspers will return to action on Friday, February 18, when they will take on Loyola in Baltimore, MD. Tip-off is slated for 7:00 p.m. Manhattan will return home on Sunday, February 20, in its final home game of the season, against Marist at 2:00 p.m. on Senior Day.
