Baseball Suffers Pair of Setbacks in Sacred Heart Doubleheader

POMONA, NY – The Manhattan Jaspers Baseball team (10-17, 4-10 MAAC) fell in the rescheduled doubleheader to the Pioneers of Sacred Heart University (8-19, 6-5 MAAC) by scores of 8-7 and 22-7, respectively, inside Clover Stadium on Friday afternoon.

GAME ONE

  • Falling behind early in the contest by as much as six runs, the Green and White responded with three runs in the fourth inning, starting with Colin Basehore notching an infield base knock. Then, Hunter Sute singled through the left side to score Basehore for the team's first run.
  • Trevor Hansen was the next batter, where he hit a two-run home run to right field to cut the Pioneer lead in half, before Jeremy Sosa notched a single of his own to center.
  • Leading off the fifth inning was Guriyandel Salva with a home run down the right field line to cut the Jaspers' lead in half, for a second time.
  • The Jaspers found a way to respond with their rally caps inside out, with Hansen leading off the ninth with a double.
  • Salva then doubled down the right field line to drive home Sosa. Finally, it was Vincent Samuel who registered a base hit to center and drove home another two runs, before Basehore ended the comeback attempt with a fly ball to left field.

GAME TWO

  • Looking to avenge the loss from the series opener, the Jaspers found a way to respond early, while trailing by two, to bring home one, and cut the Pioneer lead in half again.
  • In the first inning, Vincent Samuel posted a two-out double before he scored on a passed ball with the bases loaded.
  • In the second inning, Trevor Hansen continued his powerful afternoon with a one-out double down the left-field line.
  • The Jaspers found a way in the fourth inning with Hansen driving home Basehore with a two-out RBI double for the first baseman.
  • Hansen did it again in the seventh by leading off the inning with a home run on the second pitch, before Payton Matthews doubled to left field.
  • Manhattan continued to find a way, with Jackson Babione smashing a home run on the first pitch of the at-bat. Then Salva singled through the right side to keep the Jasper train rolling.
  • Josiah Brown, who came into the game as a pinch hitter, smacked a ground-rule double down the right field line. He then came into score after Hayden Jung-Goldberg hit a sacrifice fly to right for the team's seventh and final run of the game.
