Commanding Pitching and Salva's Two RBI's Lifts Baseball Over Quinnipiac

POMONA, NY – The Manhattan Jaspers Baseball team (8-11, 3-5 MAAC) posted a commanding victory over the Bobcats of Quinnipiac University (6-13, 1-4 MAAC) by a score of 2-1 inside Clover Stadium on Saturday evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Looking to post back-to-back victories in conference play against the Bobcats, the Green and White were inside their home building.
  • Despite falling behind in the early portion of the middle game of the three-game series, the bottom of the third featured Guriyandel Salva driving home Ryan Lordier from second with a single to left center to tie the game at one.
  • In the top of the seventh inning, the Jaspers continued a down-the-stretch pitching gem by retiring the side in order with relief pitcher Hudson Pergamit entering the game, to continue the streak of retired batters at seven.
  • On the flip side for the Jaspers, Lordier opened the inning with a leadoff infield base knock. Then, the shortstop moved up two bases on two separate errors by the Bobcats' defense.
  • After Payton Matthews struck out swinging, Salva sent a base hit through the right side to bring home Lordier for the game's winning run.
  • Pergamit continued to remain dominant for the Green and White by retiring the next six Bobcats to seal the one-run victory over Quinnipiac to win the series.

STATS AND NOTES

  • Sophomore infielder Guriyandel Salva lifted the Jaspers from the plate off a 2-for-3 afternoon, which featured a pair of RBIs, one walk, and a stolen base.
  • Junior starting pitcher Joseph Duffield logged six innings of work, surrendering four hits, one earned run, and posted three punchouts on the afternoon, while tossing 90 total pitches.
  • Junior relief pitcher Hudson Pergamit earned his third victory of the season after retiring every batter faced and logging three strikeouts in the process while throwing 48 pitches in his appearance.
  • Senior infielder Ryan Lordier went 1-for-1, crossing the plate twice, and worked one walk.
  • Sophomore outfielder Jeremy Sosa contributed a 1-for-4 afternoon.
  • Redshirt senior catcher Hunter Sute logged two walks in four plate appearances on the afternoon.

QUOTES FROM THE JASPERS

Head Coach Steven Rosen: "Have to start with Joe [Duffield] and Hudson [Pergamit] and shoutout their outings. Tremendous day on the mound - retired 16 straight hitters to finish the game. Impressive stuff from those two. Another day of high-level defense - Sosa in right field with a catch of the year type play. Credit to Gury [andel] Salva with two clutch hits and RBIs to power the offense. Proud of the boys."
