Seven Homers Powers Baseball Past UMES on Saturday

PRINCESS ANNE, MD – The Manhattan Jaspers Baseball team (4-4) powered its way past the Hawks of the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (0-7) by a score of 15-5 inside Hawk Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • After starting the game trailing by one run in the home half of the first, the Jaspers responded in commanding fashion.
  • With one out and two runners aboard the base path, Jeremy Sosa launched a towering home run to center field to drive home Hunter Sute and Justin Best.
  • The Green and White then capitalized on the Hawks' errors, which eventually saw Ryan Lordier cross the plate. Two batters later, Andreaus Lewis brought himself and Vincent Samuel home with the team's second home run of the inning to expand its lead to a comfortable five.
  • After the Hawks responded with a bases-loaded ground out and narrowed its deficit to four, Manhattan found a way with a bases-loaded walk and Lordier's sacrifice fly to right to drive home Trevor Hansen.
  • The Hawks did not surrender, finding a way to bring their deficit back to as little as three. The resilient Jaspers, two batters in, saw another home run courtesy of Samuel.
  • Then, Justin Best joined the party with a lead-off blast into center to double-up Maryland Eastern Shore.
  • In the visiting half of the eighth inning, the Jaspers put the finishing touches on the series opener with three home runs coming from Colin Basehore, Sute, and Hansen. The latter pair hit back-to-back blasts to widen the margin to as much as ten.

STATS AND NOTES

  • Infielder and reigning MAAC Player of the Week Vincent Samuel continued his strong start to the campaign with another three-hit afternoon, while crossing the plate twice and a home run. Samuel also swiped one base in the effort.

  • Catcher Hunter Sute went two-for-three and scored three runs in a two-RBI effort that also included a round-tripper and two walks on the day.
  • Catcher Andreaus Lewis went two-for-five with a home run and two RBIs.
  • Outfielder Jeremy Sosa went one-for-three with a home run and three RBIs, while working two walks.

QUOTES FROM THE JASPERS

Head Coach Steven Rosen: "Good to stack another day and go 1-0 today. Impressive showing from the offense with 7 different hitters in the lineup homering. Guys on the mound competed all day, and they played clean defense behind them, recording two double plays. Overall, it was a great team win to start the weekend. Right back at it with game one tomorrow."
