Brian Hansbury has been named new head coach of the Manhattan College Swimming & Diving program, Athletic Director Irma Garcia announced.
"We are fortunate to have a coach of Brian's caliber and experience lead us into a new era of Manhattan College Swim and Dive," said Garcia. "We are confident that Brian will do everything he can to help our talented swimmers and divers accomplish their goals both in the classroom and in the pool."Â
Hansbury established a stellar reputation on the local swimming and diving high school scene when he was the head coach at Iona Prep (2000-2002) and Horace Greeley High School (2001) in Chappaqua, N.Y. While at Iona Prep, Hansbury guided the Gaels to a Division II Title and was named Catholic High School Coach of the Year in 2002. Hansbury then served as the lead assistant (2002-2007) for Iona University Swim & Dive under the leadership of Nick Cavataro before assuming a volunteer role on the Cavataro's staff while serving as head coach (2007-2015) of the GAEL Aquatic Club established by Iona University. Since 2019, Hansbury has been the Associate Head Coach of Empire Swimming, a competitive swim club based in White Plains, N.Y. He will maintain this role while leading the Jaspers program.Â
"I wouldn't be here without the support of Athletic Director Irma Garcia, Deputy Athletic Director Anthony Kurtin, and Senior Associate Athletic Director of Compliance Ann Gulino," Hansbury said. "When I first met them and heard of their plan for Manhattan College and the swimming and diving program, I knew I wanted to be a part of it."Â
Hansbury swam at White Plains High School and remains the school's record holder in the 200m freestyle and 500m freestyle events. He went on to compete for national swim power University of Florida where he graduated with a bachelor's degree in history in 1999. Hanbury comes from a family with strong ties to Manhattan, with his father, uncle, and two younger brothers being Manhattan graduates.
"I feel it's my turn to be a Jasper and I am thrilled to be given this amazing opportunity to lead and build the swimming and diving program here at Manhattan," Hansbury said.
