Riverdale, NY – A combined effort of diverse scoring and shutdown defense helped Manhattan coast to a wire-to-wire, 12-3 victory over Wofford on Saturday at Gaelic Park for its first home win of 2018.
As a result, Manhattan is now 3-3 on the season and on a two-game winning streak. Wofford slips to 0-4 in its inaugural campaign.
The Jaspers got on the board five minutes into the ballgame. In transition, junior
Talia Price (Kinnelon, NJ / Kinnelon) dashed down the right side of the field and fired to her left to find senior
Kara Hodapp (Oak Ridge, NJ / Jefferson Township), who beat Terriers goalkeeper Kelsey Thompson to give Manhattan a 1-0 edge.
The following 12 minutes were quiet until the Jaspers went on a run. As junior
Molly Fitzpatrick (Yorktown, NY / Lakeland) cut down the middle, and Hodapp fed her in front for a 2-0 Jasper lead with less than 14 minutes to play in the opening stanza. Senior
Sarah Lang (Golden's Bridge, NY / Vermont) worked around multiple defenders moments later to score her first of the day.
With less than seven minutes to go until halftime, Fitzpatrick scooped up a loose ball and lofted a pass to sophomore
Deb Peifer (Collegeville, PA / Methacton), who shot low to nab her first career goal. Her tally was one of four goals within the next 5:20, and Manhattan entered the break up 7-0 over Wofford.
Lang completed her fifth hat trick in six games this year to break the ice in the second half, extending Manhattan's advantage to 8-0.
Wofford would finally get on the board at the 24:41 mark in the second frame when JoJo Franklin beat netminder
Nikki Prestiano (Yorktown Heights, NY / Yorktown). It was the only blemish on another solid performance for Prestiano, who collected six saves in over 44 minutes of action.
After the first Terriers goal, the Jaspers responded with three goals in less than two minutes. Freshman
Alaina Burgess (Holden, MA / The Governor's Academy) potted her first collegiate tally, junior
Caitlin Murphy (Carmel, NY / Carmel) powered through the crease for her second of the game and Lang whipped a shot past two Terriers for her fourth and final goal of the afternoon for an 11-1 Manhattan lead.
Hodapp capped Manhattan's day with an insurance goal with less than 10 minutes to play for her 12th of the season.
