NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – The Manhattan Jaspers women's lacrosse team (3-12, 2-4 MAAC), anchored by four goals each from Lauren Maher and Maya Metz, took home their third victory of the season over the Gaels of Iona (3-11, 0-6 MAAC) by a final score of 13-9 at Mazzella Field on Wednesday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Off to a slower pace than normal, it was the Gaels who struck first just before six minutes had passed.
- Shortly after, Maher took the feed from Katelynn Naylor to knot up the score just past the midway point of the opening quarter.
- Maher also scored the Jaspers' second goal of the day unassisted to tie the game once again at two-all prior to the end of the first.
- The two sides traded goals for a third time to start the second frame, as Ella Brunette threw the first punch and put the Green and White on top briefly.
- Manhattan tallied four consecutive scores as the quarter progressed, coming off the sticks of Logan Pilon, Naylor, Maher, and Metz.
- In what became the highest-scoring quarter for the visitors by five, Pilon and Julia Kerr rallied for the final two scores before the halftime break, as the visitors held a 9-4 advantage.
- Metz took less than 2:30 out of the locker room to increase the Manhattan margin to six, later followed by securing her hat trick off an assist from Pilon to keep the lead at six through 45 minutes.
- The duo of Maher and Metz, in fitting style, finished off the scoring for the Green and White, scoring their 20th and 18th goals of the season, respectively. This is the second MAAC win of Manhattan's season, both of which came on the road.
