RIVERDALE, N.Y. – The Manhattan Jaspers women's lacrosse team (2-11, 1-3 MAAC), despite scoring a goal in each quarter, lost its MAAC contest to the Pioneers of Sacred Heart (4-7, 3-1 MAAC) by a final score of 9-8 at Gaelic Park on Wednesday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Maya Metz kicked off the scoring less than five minutes into the contest, capitalizing off the feed from Logan Pilon to give the Jaspers an early edge.
- Following a tying goal from the Pioneers, Ella Brunette and Meghan Wendler scored just 33 seconds apart in the latter half of the opening quarter, taking a 3-1 lead after the first 15 minutes of action.
- Ready for the second, Sacred Heart ripped off four consecutive goals by the midway point of the frame, going up two themselves.
- Pilon chipped in with a score of her own late, but the visitors stood tall at 7-4 headed into the locker rooms.
- Lauren Maher found Brunette in stride shortly into the second half, trimming the margin down to two.
- It was then Brunette's turn to hand the ball off to Julia Kerr, as she struck for the first time in the afternoon to start the final 15 minutes down only one goal.
- Metz secured her second of the day halfway into the final quarter, with the scoreboard now showing 8-7 in favor of the road team.
- After yet another insurance goal from the Pioneers, Brunette's third goal of the day was not enough to lift the Jaspers over the edge, ending the game by the slimmest of margins at 9-8.
STATS AND NOTES
- Freshman midfielder Ella Brunette tallied her seventh game with three or more goals, which includes her last three played. The Brighton, N.Y. native also notched the first assist of her collegiate career.
