Tom Cosgrove has signed with San Diego and been assigned to the Padres' rookie-level affiliate in the Arizona League.
"I am happy for Tommy to have the experience of hearing his name called during the Major League Baseball (MLB) Draft and now signing a professional contract," said head coach
Jim Duffy. "It is something that all young players dream of, but something that only becomes a reality for a very small percentage. Tommy has worked extremely hard from the day he arrived at Manhattan, both on the mound and in the classroom. He is a tremendous example for all players who come through our program."
Cosgrove, who was selected by San Diego in the 12th Round (Pick #348) of the 2017 MLB Draft, made an impressive professional debut last night for the AZL Padres.
The Staten Island native entered in the third inning with runners on the corners and two outs before promptly inducing an inning-ending ground out. Cosgrove then worked a perfect and a scoreless fifth in capping his first professional performance.
All told, Cosgrove struck out three while scattering one hit over 2.1 scoreless innings.
