Manhattan Splits Doubleheader At Maine

Orono, ME – Manhattan defeated Maine 6-4 in game two after dropping game one by a 3-1 count at Mahaney Diamond.


The Jaspers are now 9-21 while the Black Bears are 10-17.

Junior Matt Forlow (Cold Spring, NY / Haldane) had multiple-hits in each game to pace Manahttan while the Jasper pitching staff posted an impressive 0.60 ERA with 12 strikeouts, against just three walks, over 15.0 innings.

Game Two
Manhattan rallied for a 6-4 win over Maine in the nightcap thanks to a two-run rally in the sixth.

Eight different Jaspers hit safely as the visitors rapped out 12 for the game.

In the top of the second, Manhattan opened the scoring on a Forlow two-run triple that plated sophomore Fabian Pena (Miami, FL / Calusa Prep) and junior Adam Genners (Jacksonville, FL / Stanton College Prep).

The Jaspers added to the lead one inning later when Pena chased home junior Brendan Bisset (New City, NY / Don Bosco Prep (NJ)) with a RBI single in making it a 3-0 game.

The Black Bears responded with four runs, three unearned, in the bottom of the fourth in taking a 4-3 lead.

Manhattan reclaimed the lead for good in the top of the sixth on Michael Pfenninger's (Jr., Flemington, NJ / Hunterdon Central) RBI triple that plated sophomore Richie Barrella (Larchmont, NY / Canterbury Prep). Pfenninger then scored on a Bisset RBI single as the Jaspers took a 5-4 lead.

The visitors added to the lead in the top of the seventh as Pfenninger delivered a two-out, RBI single in scoring junior Brandon Valls (Miami, FL / Dean CC).

Freshman RHP T.J. Stuart (Milford, CT / Joseph A Foran) earned his first collegiate win with a scoreless inning of relief with junior Shawn Kanwisher (Washington Township, NJ / St. Joseph Regional) registering his five save of the year with 2.0 perfect frames.

Forlow and Pfenninger each had two hits and two RBI to pace the Manhattan offense while Pena and Bisset each also recorded two hits, a run and a RBI.

Game One
Maine parlayed a pair of Manhattan errors into three runs en route to posting a 3-1 win in game one.

Junior LHP Tom Cosgrove (Staten Island, NY / Farrell) was outstanding on the mound, striking out five while scattering seven hits with one walk over 8.0 innings in firing his second complete game of the year.  

The Black Bears opened the scoring the in the bottom of the fourth as Christopher Bec doubled to lead off the frame and moved to third on a passed ball before Tyler Schwanz followed with an RBI ground out.

In the top of the fifth, the Jaspers got that run back as Pfenninger reached via a one-out double and would come around to score on a Bisset RBI single.

Maine reclaimed the lead in the sixth when Jeremy Pena scored on a two-out error before the Black Bears added another unearned run in the seventh in providing the final 3-1 count.

Forlow went 2-for-3 to lead a seven-hit Manhattan attack.

Bec went 3-for-4 with a run while Justin Courtney struck out seven in a complete game effort in notching the win.
 
The teams will conclude their series tomorrow with a doubleheader starting at 12:00 pm.
