Whether it was in cross country, indoor track or outdoor track, speed was not an issue for Tom Welling. Welling was one of the most decorated and versatile collegiate runners in the history of the Manhattan College Men's Track & Field program. He set multiple course records in cross country his senior year, including at Van Cortland Park and was a New York AAU and NCAA Championship participant in outdoor track.

During his sophomore year in 1962-1963, Welling placed in the top five in every cross country meet. He also placed and scored points in all indoor dual meets in the mile. This included a second place finish in the mile at the Metropolitan Championships and the Two Mile Relay in the K of C games. Outdoors, Welling ran a 4:17 and was third in the Steeplechase at the Met IC's.

The 1963-1964 season was an even more successful year for Welling. He placed in every race he participated in across each format. He won or finished second in all indoor mile races and on Two Mile Relay teams at AAU Development meets and Season Duel meets. This included a 4:15 mile in a dual meet at West Point. He set an outdoor school record in the Metropolitan AAU with a 4:08.20 mile. Welling was also selected as a member of the New York AAU Team that competed against a London-based team at the Crystal Palace Stadium in London, England.

Welling's senior year in 1964-1965 was his breakout-year, record-wise. In cross country, he broke the Manhattan College Van Cortlandt Park Five Mile course record with a time of 25:55. He also set the Five Mile course record at Dartmouth and West Point. He won every cross race he participated in until he was injured in the Metropolitan IC's, though he finished third anyway. He broke his own mile record with a time of 4:06.90 on the outdoor track and competed in the National AAU and NCAA Championships.

Welling has served as a board member for multiple organizations, including: NY-P/Lawrenceville Hospital, The Bronxville Historical Conservancy, Stellaris Health System, Lawrence Community Health Services, Lawrence Hospital and the Bronxville PTA and Public Library.

He and his wife, Helen, are sponsors of the Manhattan College High School Invitational Cross Country Meet in memory of their daughter, Kate.

Tom is a titan in Jasper track and field history and is proudly welcomed into the Manhattan College Athletic Hall of Fame.
