RIVERDALE, NY – Freshman outfielder Alexa Dawid (Milford, CT) of the Manhattan College softball team has been selected as the final Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Rookie of the Week for the 2016 season. She hit .357 in six games last week, as the Jaspers went 6-0 to clinch the No. 2 seed in the MAAC Tournament.
Dawid had her first career three-hit game in the opener of the doubleheader sweep over Iona on Thursday. She was 3-for-3 with a double, two runs scored and three RBIs in the 8-0 victor. Dawid then went a combined 2-for-4 in the twinbill at Saint Peter's on Saturday. In the first game, she walked once and singled in her only official at-bat. Dawid also scored a run and drove in another. She finished the regular season by going 1-for-3 with a walk in game two.
She's the seventh different Manhattan player to receive a MAAC weekly award this season, and the second to be named Rookie of the Week. Lauren Pitney (Ansonia, CT) earned the same honor on March 8. Fellow rookie Stephanie Kristo (San Jose, CA) was the MAAC Pitcher of the Week on Feb. 23, with Danielle Gabriel (Island Heights, NJ) being recognized on March 29. In addition, Elena Bowman (San Mateo, CA) (March 22, April 26) and Briana Matazinsky (Valley Falls, NY) (April 5) were selected as MAAC Player of the Week this season.
The Jaspers (30-19, 14-6 MAAC) have won 30 games for the first time since 1993, and their 14 conference victories this season established a program record. Second-seeded Manhattan opens the MAAC Tournament on Thursday at 9 a.m. against either third-seeded Canisius (22-30, 13-7 MAAC) or sixth-seeded Quinnipiac (26-27, 11-9 MAAC).
