Softball Competes At Quinnipiac Friday

HAMDEN, Conn. – The Manhattan Jaspers softball team (8-24, 4-9 MAAC), dropped both of its contests against the Bobcats from Quinnipiac (17-10, 13-3 MAAC), by the final scores of 6-0 and 10-1 at Quinnipiac Softball Field on Friday afternoon.

GAME ONE: Manhattan 0, Quinnipiac 6

  • Quinnipiac got the scoring started rather quickly, as the fourth batter in the home half of the first singled to right field to break the ice.
  • Manhattan tallied two singles in the first and second frame off the bats of Samantha Kelly and Lainey Brown, but both were caught stealing second.
  • The Bobcats compiled five more runs across the fourth and fifth innings, as two straight singles from Brianna Estevez and Kelly generated the most offensive momentum thus far for the Green and White.
  • After both advanced to second and third on a wild pitch, three consecutive groundouts thwarted any chances to put runs on the board.
  • Kendall Penny doubled in the top half of the seventh, but it was too little, too late for the Jaspers to end the matinee.
GAME TWO: Manhattan 1, Quinnipiac 10 (F/5)
  • Even more so than game one, the Bobcats pounced on their opportunity to score early, tallying four runs by the end of the first inning.
  • Kaitlyn Moody notched the first hit of the game for Manhattan in the second, but nothing more followed.
  • Now facing a 6-0 deficit, Brown and Penny grabbed a pair of singles to left field, but neither advanced past second.
  • While Quinnipiac stretched their margin out to double digits by the end of four, Angelina Gencarelli started a rally for the visitors with her one-out single in the top of the fifth.
  • Estevez then reached on an error, setting up Kelly's groundout to bring home Gencarelli for the first Jasper run in either contest.
  • Natalye DeBus' subsequent groundout ended the afternoon by a final score of 10-1.

STATS AND NOTES

  • Freshman shortstop Samantha Kelly secured the only multi-hit game amongst her teammates, racking up two during game one. She also held the sole RBI in the nightcap.
