Vote Bowman for the Senior CLASS Award
RIVERDALE, NY – After becoming the second player in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) history with 50 career home runs, Manhattan College senior catcher Elena Bowman (San Mateo, CA) has been selected MAAC Player of the Week. In six games against Columbia, Niagara and Canisius, she hit a combined .455 with two homers, six RBIs and five runs scored. Bowman was also walked 13 times while slugging 1.000 and posting an on base percentage of .750.
Bowman drew five walks in the first game of a doubleheader at Columbia on Wednesday before hitting her 50th homer in the nightcap. With the long ball, she joined Rider's Deanna Dovak as the only two players in conference history to reach the 50-home run plateu.
She then went a combined 3-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI in the doubleheader split with Niagara on Saturday. In game two of the twinbill against Canisius on Sunday, Bowman's 51st homer, a three-run shot, gave the Jaspers a 3-2 lead in an eventual 11-4 victory. With that home run, Bowman moved within six long balls of Dovak's MAAC record.
This is the second MAAC Player of the Week selection of the season for Bowman, who currently leads the league in home runs, walks, slugging percentage and on base percentage. She was previously honored on March 22. The unanimous 2015 MAAC Player of the Year, Bowman has now received the award seven times in her career.
Manhattan (22-17, 6-6 MAAC), which posted a 7-3 win over Fairleigh Dickinson on Tuesday, returns to action on Thursday with a 2 p.m. twinbill against defending MAAC champion Fairfield (21-17, 8-4 MAAC) at Gaelic Park.
