PISCATAWAY, N.J. - Freshman LHP Tom Cosgrove (Staten Island, N.Y. / Monsignor Farrell) tossed 7.0 scoreless innings and sophomore Evan Brown (Ashburnham, Mass. / Bridgton Academy (Maine)) crushed his second home run of the year to lead Manhattan to a 2-0 win over Rutgers in non-conference action at Bainton Field.
The Jaspers hit .400 (6-for-15) with two outs after batting just .121 (4-for-33) last weekend at Monmouth in moving to 7-16 with their second-straight win while the Scarlet Knights fall to 8-17.
Cosgrove, who earlier in the day was named the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Rookie of the Week, allowed just one hit in collecting his first collegiate win while stretching his scoreless inning streak to 13.0.
Both teams threatened over the first three frames before Manhattan finally broke through in the top of the fourth as Brown crushed a solo home run to right field.
Rutgers then appeared poised to tie the game in the bottom of the fifth as Chris Folinusz led off with a triple. However, Cosgrove induced a grounder to second for the first out of the frame. Jeff Anderson followed with a liner that was kept in the infield by freshman Michael Pfenninger (Flemington, N.J. / Hunterdon Central), who after knocking down the ball threw over to first for the second out while keeping Folinusz at third. Cosgrove then ended the threat by inducing an inning-ending fly out.
After Brown's two-out home run, Knight pitching retired the next 12 Jaspers before the visitors put pieced together a two-out rally in the top of the eighth. Senior Chris Kalousdian (Fort Salonga, N.Y. / King Park) and junior Chris Reynolds (Wall, N.J. / St. Rose) each singled before senior Joe McClennan (Highland Mills, N.Y. / Cornwall Central) greeted reliever Joe Young with a RBI single to center field in extending the lead out to 2-0.
Cosgrove along with sophomore relievers RHP Shawn Kanwisher (Washington Township, N.J. / St. Joseph Regional) and LHP Joe Jacques (Shrewsbury, N.J. / Red Bank Regional) faced just four over the minimum thanks to a defense that turned two double plays and Reynolds' play behind the plate as the Garden State native threw out two runners trying to steal.
Kalousdian led a seven-hit effort, going 2-for-4 in helping Cosgrove improve to 1-2 while Jacques earned his first save of the season.
Baxter (1-1) was saddled with the loss, striking out three while yielding one run on four hits over 6.0 innings.
Manhattan returns to action against Marist on Thursday, April 2 at 3 p.m. in the team's home opener at Dutchess Stadium.
