Manhattan Opens MAAC Play Against Fairfield

LIVE STATS

BRONX, N.Y. –
Manhattan (3-12) continues its season-opening 22-game road trip with three games against Fairfield (1-9) beginning on Saturday, March 21 at Houlihan Park on the campus of Fordham University.

The three-game set is Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) opener for both teams and was shifted from the Stags' field due to the winter weather that has wrecked havoc on the Northeast in the first part of 2015.

As of now, the teams will contest a 3 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday before concluding play with a 4 p.m. Sunday match-up.

Weekend Pitching Match-Ups
Game 1 - So. RHP Joey Rocchietti (0-3, 8 K, 4.91 ERA) vs. Sr. RHP EJ Ashworth (0-1, 4 K, 8.38 ERA)
Game 2 - Sr. RHP Michael Scarinci (1-3, 6 K, 4.80 ERA) vs. Sr. LHP Tucker Panciera (0-1, 1 K, 6.97 ERA)
Game 3 - Sr. RHP Scott McClennan (2-2, 16 K, 2.91 ERA) – Jr. RHP Mike Wallace (0-2, 5 K, 15.26 ERA)

SERIES:
Fairfield leads the all-time series by a 69-43 count and has won each of the last three match-ups. While the three-game set is technically a home series for the Stags, the teams are 1-1 when playing at neutral site venues.

LAST YEAR:
The teams met just once a year ago with Fairfield defeating Manhattan 3-2 in the opening round of the 2014 MAAC Tournament. Game one features both starting pitchers from last year's match-up as Ashworth and Rocchietti each recorded complete game efforts.

COACH DUFFY AGAINST FAIRFIELD:
Head coach Jim Duffy is 4-4 against the Stags as the head coach of the Jaspers, including 1-1 during MAAC Tournament play. As a rookie coach in 2012, Duffy went 2-1 against Fairfield before defeating the Stags 1-0 at the MAAC Championships.

OF LATE
Fairfield has won each of the last three meetings between the teams.

TOO CLOSE FOR COMFORT
Over the last three years, all eight meetings between the teams have been decided by three runs or less, including three by a single run.

LUCKY NUMBER THREE
Game threes are typically the hardest for teams as pitching staffs are depleted by the end of the weekend. However, that hasn't been the case for Manhattan of late as the Jaspers have won three-straight game threes.

HIGH FIVE
Manhattan is 3-2 this year when scoring at least five runs in a game and 0-10 when failing to hit the standard.

FOR STARTERS
Duffy is 7-2 in MAAC-opening weekends since taking over prior to the 2012 season.

HOMER HAPPY
The Jaspers have four home runs in 15 games this year after notching just nine in 50 a year ago.

QUICK HITS
* After hitting just .120 a year ago, Chris Reynolds is off to a hot start in his third year in Riverdale. The junior backstop is batting a team-best .281 (9-for-32) with team-highs in slugging (.469) and OBP (.395).

* Reynolds has reached base safely in each of his last seven games and is batting .400 (8-for-20) during that time with six runs, three doubles, one home run and five walks while posting a .520 OBP.

* The Garden State native also earned MAAC Player of the Week accolades earlier this season after hitting .625 in a doubleheader split with George Washington. After singling in the first game of a doubleheader before going a 4-for-5 outing in the finale with two doubles, a homerun, three runs and two RBI.

* Sophomore Evan Brown is second on the team with a .263 average to go along with a team-high four doubles and a home run. Brown has hit safely in seven-straight games while batting .348 (8-for-23) during that time with a .652 slugging percentage.

* Senior Mikey Miranda has reached base safely in eight-straight games and 11-of-13 this season en route to posting a .262 average with four extra-base hits.

* Sophomore Jose Carrera ranks second in the MAAC and 47th nationally with nine stolen bases. The diminutive shortstop has also drawn a team-high 11 walks en route to posting a .339 OBP.

* McClennan earned his second win in as many weeks against George Mason thanks to a career-high nine strikeouts over 7.0 scoreless innings of work.

* The fifth-year senior worked around a bases loaded, nobody out situation in the first inning while setting the tone as McClennan limited the Patriots to a .083 average (1-for-12) with runners in scoring position.

* McClennan, who earned MAAC Pitcher of the Week accolades after allowing a single unearned run over 8.0 innings in a win over George Washington, has a 15.0 inning scoreless streak with 10 strikeouts during that time.

*On the year, McClennan is 2-2 with a team-best 16 strikeouts over 21.2 innings while posting a team-low 2.91 ERA.

* Scarinci, who picked up the first Jasper win of the year at FIU, is 1-3 with a 4.80 ERA.

* Rocchietti has once again been the victim of poor run support as the sophomore righty has received just three runs over his four starts while limiting the opposition to three runs or less three times.

* The sophomore workhorse is 0-3 with eight strikeouts and a 4.91 ERA over a team-high 22.0 innings.

* Sophomore RHP Shawn Kanwisher entered with the bases loaded and nobody out in series opener with George Mason before promptly striking out the side.

* Last week, Manhattan pitching limited opposing hitters to a .214 average (9-for-42) with runners in scoring position

ABOUT FAIRFIELD
* Fairfield is 1-9 this season but had played the nation's second toughest schedule heading into this week's play.

* The Stags are hitting just .225 with Alex Witkus leading the way with a .300 average. Sebastian Salvo is the top power threat with four doubles, one home and 10 RBI.

* On the bump, Fairfield has a 7.43 ERA.
