BEAUMONT, Texas - Manhattan concluded its season-opening series at Lamar with a pair of setbacks at Vincent Beck Stadium. The Jaspers fall to 0-4 on the year while the Cardinals improve to 6-2.
Game One Recap:
Manhattan opened the scoring with a pair of first-inning runs. Senior Chris Kalousdian (Kings Park, N.Y. / Kings Park) reached via an error before sophomore Jose Carrera (Miami, Fla. / St. Brendan) drew a walk. Later in the frame with Kalousdian at third and Carrera at second, senior Joe McClennan (Highland Mills, N.Y. / Cornwall) delivered a two-out, two-run single to right field to plate Kalousdian and Carrera.
The Jaspers would add to the lead in the top of the third with two more runs while extending their lead out to 4-0. Kalousdian led off the frame with a double before being plated on senior Mikey Miranda's ((Miami, Fla. / Florida Christian) two-out triple. Miranda then capped the scoring when he came around to score on an infield error.
Sophomore LHP Joe Jacques (Shrewsbury, N.J. / Red Bank Regional) breezed through his first two innings of 2015 before Lamar knotted the game up with four runs, three of which came with two outs, in the bottom part of the third.
The Cardinals then assumed what would prove to be an insurmountable 7-4 lead in the bottom of the fourth on Brandon Provost's two-out, three-run double.
Lamar would add to the lead with single scores in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings in building up a 10-4 advantage. The Jaspers would rally with a pair of runs in the top of the eighth after loading the bases with no outs but could get no closer in falling 11-7.
Miranda went 2-for-5 with a double, triple and two runs while Santisteban also was 2-for-5 to pace a seven-hit Manhattan attack.
Jacques was saddled with the loss, striking out five over 4.0 innings while allowing seven runs, six earned, on eight hits.
Eight Cardinal regulars hit safely led by Kevin Santana and Reed Seeley, each of whom notched three hits.
Will Hibbs (1-0) earned the win, striking out seven while yielding four runs, one earned, on five hits over 5.0 innings.
