The teams will now conclude their four-game series with a doubleheader on Saturday, Feb. 21 with first pitch slated for 2 p.m. (EST).
Game One Recap:Lamar erupted for 11 runs, seven unearned, in the first inning and never looked back en route to posting a 14-1 win in the first game of the afternoon.
The Cardinals added to the lead with a run in the bottom of the third, Manhattan got on the board in the top of the fifth inning with a single run. Senior
Joe McClennan (Highland Mills, N.Y. / Cornwall) was plunked leading off the frame. One out later, junior
Chris Reynolds (
Wall, N.J. / St. Rose) was also hit before freshman
Ryan Gronlier (
Doral, Fla. / Doral Academy) delivered a two-out RBI single down the left field line.
Unfortunately, that would be as close as the Jaspers would get as Lamar won by a 14-1 count.
Sophomore
Jose Carrera (
Miami, Fla. / St. Brendan) extended his hitting streak to 12 games with a fifth-inning double while senior
Vin Teixeira (
Hamden, Conn. / Hamden Hall Country Day) also added a double to highlight a three-hit attack.
Making his first appearance since the 2013 season, senior RHP
Scott McClennan (
Highland Mills, N.Y. / Cornwall) was saddled with the loss, allowing 11 runs, four earned, with three strikeouts over 2.0 innings.
RHP Danny Fernandez (2-0) earned the win, striking out five over 7.0 innings in a complete game performance.
Game Two Recap:Lamar captured game two by a 2-1 count thanks to breaking an eighth-inning tie on Cutter McDowell's RBI double before LHP Chase Angelle finished off a complete game 9.0-inning outing with a 1-2-3 ninth.
Manhattan opened the scoring with a first-inning run as senior
Chris Kalousdian (
Kings Park, N.Y. / Kings Park) led off the game with a single before stealing second. After moving to third on a well-placed Carrera ground out, junior
Christian Santisteban (
Miami, Fla. / Gulliver Prep) picked up Kalousdian with a run-scoring single through the left side. Senior
Mikey Miranda (Miami, Fla. /
Florida Christian) followed with a single of his own only to see Angelle evade further damage by inducing an inning-ending double play.
After threatening in the bottom part of the first, the Cardinals broke through with the game-tying run in their second trip to the plate. McDowell got the rally going with the first of his three hits, a one-out single through the right side. After moving to second on a ground out, Tyler Sullivan plated McDowell with a RBI double. Jasper starter RHP
Joey Rocchietti (Green Brook, N.J. / Watchung Hills) then settled down and calmly induced an inning-ending grounder to limit the damage.
Lamar threatened to take its first lead in each of the next two frames only to be stifled by Rocchietti, who stranded a pair of runners in each frame, aided by freshman
Brendan Bisset (New City, N.Y. / Don Bosko Prep) diving grab in right field to end the fourth.
In the top of the sixth, Santisteban gave Manhattan its first runner in scoring position since the second with a one-out double but was unable to advance any further.
McDowell led off the bottom part of the frame with a single only to see
Rocchietti hunker down and retire the next three batters without incident while capping a solid, 6.0-inning performance.
The score would stay tied at 1-1 until the Cardinals forged ahead in the pivotal eighth inning.
Santisteban finished up 3-for-4 with a double and a RBI while Kalousdian went 2-for-4 with a run and a stolen base to pace an eight-hit attack.
