SCRANTON, Pa. - The Manhattan men's and women's swimming and diving teams defeated Marywood in the opening meets of their 2015-2016 campaigns on Saturday afternoon.
The men's side earned a 131-100 victory, while the women's team won by a 151-72 final.
With the wins, head coach Walter Olsewski now has a combined 400 career coaching victories (202 at the collegiate level and 198 from his days as a high school coach).
Men
For the men, senior Lance Neuendorf, junior Dylan Cooney, sophomore Brandon Shields and freshman Evan Battisti were named Co-Performers of the Meet by the coaching staff.
Neuendorf and Shields opened the day as part of the 200 medley relay team that placed first with a time of 1:41.66.
Battisti followed by swimming to a top finish in the 1000 freestyle, clocking a 10:28.44.
In the 200 freestyle, Shields continued his impressive afternoon by taking first with a time of 1:49.10.
Neuendorf swam to a 2:03.40 to earn first in the 200 individual medley before Cooney took to the the diving board for his first event of the afternoon and first as a Jasper. Cooney scored a 229.65 in the 1-meter dive, breaking the school record by 21.30 points.
Neuendorf concluded his day with a 54.37 in the 100 backstroke, to finish as the event's top performer.
Shields and Battisti culminated their stellar meets by taking first and second, respectively, in the 500 freestyle. Shields touched in under the 5-minute mark, with a 4:59.21, while Battisti finished closely behind with a 5:02.52.
Women
Junior Sara Buckley, sophomore Alexandra Hutzler and freshmen Yvonne Corcoran and Kathryn Voitik were highlighted as Co-Performers of the Meet by the Manhattan coaches.
Hutzler, Voitik and Buckley took part in the 200 medley relay to open the afternoon, and the three helped the Jaspers to a top finish with a time of 1:56.17.
Corcoran clocked an 11:32.02 to finish first in the 1000 freestyle, and Voitik followed with a 2:00.20 to take first in the 200 freestyle.
In the 200 individual medley, Hutzler earned first place with a time of 2:19.61.
Voitik, Buckley and Hutzler touched in with first place results in the 100 butterfly, 100 freestyle and 100 breaststroke events. Voitik swam to a 1:03.96 in the butterfly, Buckley raced to a 50.50 in the freestyle and Hutzler clocked a 1:11.83 in the breaststroke.
Corcoran ended the first meet of her freshman campaign with a top finish in the 500 freestyle. She touched in at 5:36.56.
The Jaspers will return to action on Saturday, Oct. 17, when the men's and women's teams host Fairfield and Saint Peter's for a 2 p.m. tri-meet at the Ethical Culture Fieldston School.
