Manhattan Selected Sixth in MAAC Preseason Poll

2015 Manhattan Men's Lacrosse Schedule

RIVERDALE, N.Y. - The Manhattan men's lacrosse team, led by third-year head coach Steve Manitta, was voted the sixth-best squad in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC), as announced by the league on Wednesday morning.

The Jaspers received 13 points in a vote by the seven head coaches of the conference. The defending MAAC champions, Siena, collected 46 points in the poll, making the Saints the 2015 preseason favorite. Siena concluded the 2014 season with an 11-6 overall record, including a perfect 6-0 mark in league play.

Marist, who fell to Siena in the 2014 MAAC title game, was selected second in the preseason poll. The Red Foxes compiled 38 points in the vote. The fourth-place team from 2014, Canisius, was chosen as the third-best side in this year's ballot with 33 points. Detroit and Quinnipiac followed closely behind with 33 and 30 points to finish fourth and fifth in the vote, respectively. Following Manhattan's 13 points, Monmouth rounded out the poll with nine points.

The top four teams at the end of the regular season will qualify for the 2015 MAAC postseason tournament, which will be hosted on Friday, May 1 and Sunday, May 3 by the highest-seeded full MAAC member.

Last season had a dramatic finish, with five teams in the conference finishing tied for second place with identical 3-3 league records. Only three of those five teams qualified for the MAAC tournament and Manhattan was eliminated after the goal differential tiebreaker system was put into effect.

The Jaspers will open their season on Saturday, Feb. 7, when the team travels to Long Island for a 1 p.m. bout with Stony Brook.
