Kate Bowen Named ECAC Scholar Athlete of the Year

ECAC Honors Dinner Registration

RIVERDALE, N.Y. – Kate Bowen (Newtown, Conn.), the Manhattan College Class of 2014 Valedictorian and a First Team All-Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) softball player, has been selected as one of six recipients of the ECAC Scholar Athlete of the Year Award.  She will be honored at the annual ECAC Honors Dinner at the Sea Crest Hotel in Falmouth, Mass., on September 28.

The first physical education major ever to win the College's Donald J. Carty Valedictory Medal, Bowen graduated with a cumulative GPA of 3.86.  A three-time MAAC All-Academic Team member, Bowen was named to the Capital One Academic All-America® third team in 2014, becoming the first Manhattan softball player to receive that honor since 2000.  She's also a two-time Academic All-District honoree and three-time National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) All-America Scholar-Athlete.

In addition, Bowen was one of the top 30 candidates for the Senior CLASS Award, and she was nominated by the conference for the NCAA Woman of the Year Award.

On the field, the second/baseman pitcher earned First Team All-MAAC honors as a utility player after starting all 55 games in the leadoff spot.  Bowen led the Jaspers with 61 hits, 41 runs scored and a .318 batting average, while also collecting five home runs and 14 doubles.  As a pitcher, she recorded team-leading totals of 12 wins, 23 starts, 13 complete games, three shutouts and a 3.60 ERA.

She was previously a First Team All-MAAC choice as an infielder in 2013, as well as a Second Team All-MAAC selection in 2012.

Manhattan's Female Student-Athlete of the Year for both 2012-13 and 2013-14, Bowen led the Jaspers to the championship round of the MAAC Tournament for the first time since 1999 this season.  She finished her career as Manhattan's all-time leader in games played (190) and at-bats (618), while also ranking second all-time in hits (211), and third in doubles (39) and runs scored (122).
