RIVERDALE, N.Y. – For the second straight season, Manhattan College senior pitcher/second baseman Kate Bowen (Newtown, Conn.) has been named to the Capital One Academic All-District I Softball Team by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). She's the first Manhattan student-athlete to earn Academic All-District honors in consecutive years since Malin Marmbrandt (track & field) in 2009-10.
Bowen has started all 45 games this season and currently leads the Jaspers with 54 hits, 13 doubles and a .331 batting average. She also ranks second on the squad in runs (33) and is tied for third on the team in home runs (5). In addition, Bowen paces the pitching staff in wins (10), games started (19), complete games (11), shutouts (3) and ERA (3.43).
Manhattan's 2013 Female Student-Athlete of the Year, Bowen was one of 30 candidates for the Senior CLASS Award. A two-time Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) All-Academic Team honoree, she also earned a place on the Academic All-District Team in 2013.
To be selected to the All-District Team, student-athletes must have completed at least two semesters at their institution, be a starter or significant reserve and have a cumulative GPA of 3.30 or higher. Bowen now moves on to the CoSIDA Academic All-America ballot.
The Jaspers conclude the 2014 regular season this weekend. Manhattan (21-24, 9-7 MAAC) hosts MAAC-leading Fairfield (19-19, 14-4 MAAC) for a 12 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday, then visits Monmouth (19-19, 9-7 MAAC) for a 1 p.m. twinbill on Sunday. The Jaspers need just one win in the four games to clinch their first MAAC Tournament berth since 2011.
