RIVERDALE, N.Y. - Manhattan College junior right-handed pitcher Sean Abbate was named the Metro Atlantic Athletic Pitcher of the Week, the conference office announced on Tuesday.
Abbate was brilliant in relief against NYIT on Wednesday, throwing 5 1/3 hitless innings to help lift the Jaspers to a 2-0 win at Brooklyn's MCU Park.Abbate allowed just one hit batter during his stellar performance. He struck out seven batters and ultimately earned his first victory of the season.
Abbate is the second Jasper hurler to earn a MAAC weekly award this season. Freshman Joey Rocchietti was named MAAC Rookie of the Week on February 25.
The Jaspers are back in action this Saturday, March 22 to open MAAC play against Quinnipiac in Hamden, Conn. The teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday, a nine-inning game followed by a seven-inning game, and then a nine-inning game on Sunday at noon.
