ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - Former Manhattan College star Jake Freeman earned his second career national title over the weekend, winning the weight throw at the USA Indoor Track & Field Championships from the Albuquerque Convention Center on Saturday. It's the first national indoor title for Freeman, an eight-time All-American and two-time NCAA champion while at Manhattan. He won the hammer throw at the 2010 USA Outdoor Championships.
Representing Nike and the New York Athletic Club, Freeman sat in second place after three throws. In the fourth round, he moved into the lead with a toss of 23.51 meters (77 feet, 1¾ inches). Three-time Olympian AG Kruger, who had been the leader with a first-round throw of 23.37 m (76'8¼), was unable to pass Freeman on his final three attempts, fouling each time, and had to settle for silver.
While at Manhattan, Freeman won the 2003 NCAA title in the weight throw and added an outdoor crown in the hammer throw in 2004. He competed in the hammer throw at last summer's U.S. Olympic Team Trials, finishing eighth.
