McGovern, Wehrli Claim MAAC Weekly Honors

RIVERDALE, N.Y. – After record-setting performances at last weekend's ASU Invitational, Manhattan College's Brian McGovern (Yonkers, N.Y.) and Lydia Wehrli (Anieres, Switzerland) have been named the first Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Performers of the Week for the outdoor season.  McGovern established a school and Irish national record in the pole vault, while Wehrli set a new school mark in the hammer throw.

McGovern cleared 5.36 meters (17 feet, seven inches) to win the pole vault at the ASU Invitational on Saturday.  With that effort, he broke his own school record, set in 2010, by 30 centimeters.  He then made three very good attempts at 5.46 m (17'11).  McGovern is currently ranked No. 1 in the East Region, No. 4 in the NCAA and No. 10 in the world, and he has qualified for both the NCAA East Regional and IC4A Championships in the event.

Wehrli earned Women's Performer of the Week honors after placing fifth in the hammer throw at the ASU Invitational.  With an effort of 57.16 m (187'6), Wehrli broke Marina Liander's 2006 school record of 54.41 m (178'6).  She qualified for both the ECAC Championships and NCAA East Regional, and is currently ranked eighth in the region.

The Jaspers return to action this weekend at the Dick Shea Invitational in West Point, N.Y.  Competition gets underway at 12 p.m. on Friday.
