RIVERDALE, N.Y. - Manhattan junior John Soldinger was named MAAC Co-Pitcher of the Week and Joe McClennan earned MAAC Rookie of the Week honors after lifting the Jaspers to a conference series sweep of Saint Peter's this past weekend. Soldinger delivered a complete game shutout on Saturday to win his fourth straight MAAC start as he led Manhattan (26-24, 15-6 MAAC) to a 1-0 victory over the Peacocks. McClennan was flawless defensively at third base and he hit .444 over three starts during the series.
For Soldinger it was his second MAAC Pitcher of the Week award, sharing it this week with Marist pitcher Brett Houseal who threw a two-hit shutout against Canisius in a seven inning contest. Soldinger rung up six strikeouts in his spectacular performance and did not walk or hit a batter through nine innings of work. It was Soldinger's sixth complete game effort of the season as he also lowered his ERA against MAAC opponents to 2.70.
McClennan received Rookie of the Week honors for the first time, but it was the fourth time a Manhattan player received the award this season. McClennan posted a .545 on-base percentage, had four hits, and scored two runs to help Manhattan sweep its third MAAC series. The freshman from Highland Mills, N.Y. saved his best performance for the third contest against Saint Peter's as he hit 2-for-3, walked twice and posted his fourth double of the season to help the Jaspers battle back from a three run deficit.
The Jaspers will wrap up the regular-season on Thursday and Friday at Van Cortlandt Park when they host Siena for a three game league series. One win over the Saints will clinch the program's fourth MAAC Regular-Season title in the last five years.
