RIVERDALE, N.Y. - Manhattan junior guard George Beamon was named MAAC Player of the Week for the second time this season after he averaged 26.0 points and 6.5 rebounds in two games last week. Beamon, the MAAC's scoring leader (18.4 ppg) through the regular-season, shot 59.4% (19-32) from the field in back-to-back 20+ point performances.
Beamon exploded his second double-double of the season on Friday helping the Jaspers to a 90-77 victory over Canisius which helped Manhattan secure a third place finish in the MAAC, the program's highest finish since 2005-06. Beamon had a game-high 28 points and 10 rebounds, while shooting 13-for-19 (68.4%) from the field against the Golden Griffs.
Then on Sunday, Beamon recorded his ninth 20-point performance of the year scoring 24 points against Loyola. He shot a perfect 10-for-10 from the free-throw line, posted a 46.2% (6-13) field goal percentage and handed out two assists.
Beamon will help lead Manhattan into the 2012 MAAC Championships this weekend at the MassMutual Center in Springfield, Mass. The Jaspers square off with the sixth seed Siena on Saturday at 9:30 p.m.
