RIVERDALE, N.Y. - Jaspers' junior starting pitcher Mike Giordano had his consecutive game win streak end at six as Manhattan (23-15) dropped a 19-7 decision to East Tennessee State (27-15) on Sunday in Johnson City, Tenn. Manhattan sophomore shortstop Nick Camastro hit 3-for-4 with a RBI, while senior Mike McCann homered for the fifth time this season. The Bucs launched five home runs and recorded 20 hits to sweep the three game series with Manhattan.
McCann blasted a two-run homer in the first inning, before the Bucs rallied to score the next 11 runs off of Giordano over three frames to take a commanding lead. The Bucs scoring surge featured home runs from Paul Hoilman, Dylan Pratt and Bo Reeder. Giordano lasted 2 1/3 innings and struck out three batters as he fell to 6-2 on the season.
Manhattan put two runs on the scoreboard in the fourth inning to pull within 11-4, courtesy of a fielding error that allowed Ramon Ortega to score after leading off the frame with his sixth double of the year. The Jaspers recorded their second run on Camastro's infield RBI single.
East Tennessee State got to Jaspers' right-hander John Soldinger in the fifth inning by registering two more runs from Clinton Freeman's solo homer to right field and Hoilman's RBI double. The Bucs scored three more runs on Soldinger in the sixth inning with a home run coming from Kerry Doane, along with RBIs from Derek Niesman and Reeder to take a 16-4 advantage. Soldinger pitched 3 1/3 innings and had one strikeout before turning the ball over to junior Taylor Sewitt in the seventh.
The Jaspers scored three runs in the eighth inning to get within 16-7. Senior Mark Onorati came in on a wild pitch, and then Julian De La Rosa posted a RBI double down the left field line. Junior Matt Troisi knocked in the Jaspers' final run of the inning with a RBI single through the left side.
East Tennessee State matched the three runs in their half of the eighth inning to regain a double digit lead (19-7). All three runs came against Sewitt who finished with three strikeouts on the afternoon.
Reeder anchored the Bucs' offensive performance by finishing 4-for-5 from the plate with three runs scored and six RBI. Onorati, McCann and Yoandry Galan recorded two hits apiece in the Jaspers' setback.
East Tennessee State starter Bo Burton received credit for the victory, after pitching five innings and striking out two batters.
Manhattan returns to action on Tuesday when the Jaspers host Fordham at Van Cortlandt Park. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
