RIVERDALE, N.Y. - According to the most recent NCAA Division I Graduation Success Rates (GSR), 89 percent of Manhattan College student-athletes graduate on-time with their class. Four Manhattan teams-women's basketball, women's soccer, women's swimming and volleyball had a perfect GSR of 100.
The GSR was developed by the NCAA as a part of its academic reform initiatives as a more accurate measure of the academic success of Division I student-athletes. Unlike the federal graduation rate, which is also calculated annually, the GSR takes transfer students into account. Institutions aren't penalized for student-athletes that leave in good academic standing. In addition, the GSR accounts for student-athletes transferring into an institution and those who enroll at midyear. Each school has an overall GSR, as well as separate sport-by-sport calculations.
The NCAA began collecting GSR data in 1995, and this year marks the 10th annual report. The most recent GSR info is based on the four classes that entered college from 2001-02 to 2004-05. Student-athletes are given six years to graduate after their initial enrollment.
