RIVERDALE, N.Y. - The Manhattan men's basketball program has expanded its 2010-2011 recruiting class with the most recent signing of Torgrim Sommerfeldt. Sommerfeldt, a 6'7" shooting guard from Norway, gained significant interest from U.S. colleges after the 2008 Nike Hoop Summit in Portland, Ore., when he played for the World Team as one of the top under-20 prospects.
"Torgrim provides good size and length for his position," stated Jaspers' head coach Barry Rohrssen. "He has demonstrated a strong ability to shoot the ball. We welcome Torgrim with his rich cultural background to our already diverse and beautiful campus."
Sommerfeldt is completing a prep school year at NTG Sports Academy in Oslo, Norway. According to ESPN.com Scouting, Sommerfeldt is a shooting specialist with a quick trigger who will stretch defenses.
At the international level, Sommerfeldt scored eight points on 3-for-4 shooting at the 2008 Nike Hoops Summit against the U.S. Junior National Team, which featured several current NBA players. Sommerfeldt is a member of the Norwegian National Team. He played for Norway's 2007 National Under-18 Team, which competed at the European Championships. Sommerfeldt is expected to compete with the Norwegian Under-20 National Team at the 2010 European Championships this July in Austria.
Sommerfeldt is the newest addition to a well versed Jaspers' recruiting class, which includes First Team All-CHSAA point guard Mike Alvarado (Bronx, N.Y./All Hallows), First Team All-PSAL forward Rhamel Brown (Brooklyn, N.Y./Transit Tech), Junior College Regional XV Player of the Year Roberto Colonette (Queens, N.Y./Robert F. Kennedy/ASA Institute), 6'1" guard Kidani Brutus (Bronx, N.Y./Wings Academy/Carl Albert State), and 6'8" forward Robert Martina (Pompano Beach, Fla./Deerfield Beach/Miami Dade).
