Riverdale, N.Y. - Despite outshooting its opponent, the Manhattan College women's lacrosse team lost its MAAC season opener to Iona College 15-11 in a match played at Gaelic Park. The Lady Jaspers got two goals each from Caralyn Hickey, Tara Convery, Keri Morrison and Phelicia VanOverbeke in a wide open affair.
Manhattan (now 1-7, 0-1 in the MAAC) outshot the Gaels 35-33 and went out to an early lead, but a six-goal Iona spurt midway through the first half wound up being the turning point in the game.
In addition to scoring two goals, Manhattan's Morrison was a standout on defense, causing five turnovers and collecting two ground balls. Breana Leonard scooped up four ground balls and Ashley McHale three. Julia DiBernardo picked up seven saves in goal for the Lady Jaspers.
For Iona (now 4-6, 1-0 in the MAAC), Elizabeth Cohalan was the leading scorer with four.
Manhattan went ahead 2-1 in the sixth minute of the game on goals by Morrison and Julia Lavelle, but then Iona ran out six goals in the next 10 minutes to take a 7-2 lead. Iona also ended the first half on a 3-0 run to make the halftime score 11-5.
The Lady Jaspers stated a comeback during the first seven minutes of the second half, scoring four consecutive goals to make the score 11-9, but then a 3-0 run in the next six minutes clinched the game for Iona.
