RIVERDALE, N.Y. - Junior forward Caroline Morse slid her fourth game winning goal of the year into the back of the net in the 97th minute to lift the Manhattan women's soccer team past Iona (5-9-1, 2-2 MAAC) on Friday in Riverdale. Lady Jaspers' freshman goalkeeper Kara Davis made seven saves to earn the shutout in Manhattan's (5-7-1, 1-3-1 MAAC) third straight overtime match.
"It was a tale of two halves," stated Manhattan's fifth year head coach Sean Driscoll. "We played our best half all season in the first, and in the second half Iona was better. We made adjustments in overtime and found a way to win."
Both squads made several defensive stops and dodged scoring opportunities throughout regulation to preserve the scoreless tie.. Manhattan outshot the Gaels 8-3 in the first half, but it was Iona that controlled their offensive side of the field in the second half outshooting the Lady Jaspers' 11-4.
Manhattan controlled possession for the majority of overtime, and seven minutes into the extra period Morse made her game winning run up the left side. She worked through the Iona defense all the way to the end line, crossed feet and fired a shot with her right foot that trickled past Gaels' keeper Suzanne Baldissard.
"Both teams gave a great effort," explained Driscoll. "Glad we found a way to win down the stretch. I am very happy for our players."
