Jaspers Rip Off Three Unanswered Scores; Women's Soccer Holds Off Wagner

RIVERDALE, NY – The Manhattan Jaspers Women's Soccer team (2-1), in its first game within the confines of Gaelic Park, stood tall in its non-conference matchup against the Seahawks from Wagner (1-2) by a final score of 3-1 in Riverdale.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Manhattan generated some early chances, with captains Olivia McMaster and Lauren Ahearn both missing slightly.
  • McMaster later clocked the first shot on target, forcing a save from Wagner's Abigail Marcello.
  • Just past the 22nd minute mark, the Seahawks struck first to take an initial 1-0 lead off the foot of Madeline Hayes.
  • Less than 15 seconds later, the Green and White controlled the ball down their offensive end, with Eryn Primus finding Ahearn who fired the tying goal to the back of the net.
  • Ahearn was the only other Manhattan player to register a shot on goal over the next 20 and change, sending us to the locker rooms.
  • Once again, McMaster got a shot on target in shortly after the second half commenced.
  • Following a sequence of passes from Ahearn and McMaster, Scarlett Smith scored for the third time this season to give Manhattan their first lead of the afternoon in the 51st minute.
  • Not allowing a Wagner shot for nearly 40 minutes, Marlene Berlinghoff registered another good chance, forcing another Marcello save.
  • Roughly 16 minutes following the go-ahead goal, McMaster finally connected to put her on the scoreboard, with S. Smith on the assist.
  • Manhattan only let up one more shot the rest of the way, securing the 3-1 victory with ease.
STATS AND NOTES
  • Seniors and team captains, forward Lauren Ahearn and midfielder Olivia McMaster, each secured their first goals of 2026 this afternoon.
  • Sophomore forward Scarlett Smith continued to elevate her point total, adding three today with a goal and assist, upping her season tally to seven.
  • Manhattan dominated the shots battle, dwarfing Wagner's opportunities 18-3, including a 7-1 advantage on target.
  • The Green and White also accumulated 10 corners, tied for their highest mark of the young season.
NEXT UP
  • Head Coach Brendan Lawler and the Jaspers will be back in action next Monday (Aug. 31), when they return to Gaelic Park to take on the Hornets from Delaware State. Action is scheduled to get underway at 3:00 PM, and action can be viewed live on the Jasper Sports Network.
