RIVERDALE, N.Y. ? The Manhattan men's track & field team secured the program's 35th Metropolitan Indoor Championship title this afternoon at the 168th Street Armory in New York, edging out second place Seton Hall by a score of 136-125. The Lady Jaspers, meanwhile, tied Columbia for third place posting 94 total points. Seton Hall earned first on the women's side.
On the men's side, the Jaspers did a great job of piling up points in the throws and jumps, and also scored well in many of the track events.
In the throws, the Jaspers finished first, second and fourth. Milan Jotanovic took home the gold medal with an NCAA "A" Championship qualifying toss of 19.47m, while Rich Reuter took second place with a mark of 14.84m and Paul Peulich took fourth with a mark of 14.13m. Meanwhile, in the weight throw, Peulich took first with a throw of 18.34m, with Seid Mujanovic grabbing third (17.78m) and Reuter taking fifth (15.00m).
In the jumps, the Jaspers took home gold medals in the triple jump and high jump. Chris Sole won his third Met indoor championship in the high jump with a personal record mark of 2.09m with teammate Jason Grant taking third with a leap of 1.89m. Meanwhile, in the triple jump, Dexter Jules won the event with a mark of 15.44m, with teammate Kosta Randjc grabbing third with an IC4A qualifying distance of 14.96m.
The long jump found the Jaspers scoring points for third, fourth, fifth and sixth place, with Jules jumping 6.92m, Denis Street jumping 6.65m, Randjic posting a mark of 6.58m and Aeden McDonough leaping 6.56m, respectively. In the pole vault, Nikolay Tkachenko came in second with a personal record mark of 4.65m.
On the track, the 3000m found freshman Brendan Brethel taking first place in personal record time of 8.44.32, while sophomore Milos Vuckovic took home third in the 800m in 1:56.12 and fourth in the mile in a time of 4:19.29.
Other Jasper scorers in running events included Nick Estis taking fifth in the 200m in a personal record time of 22.50s; Kelton Cumberbatch scoring fourth place points in the 500m in 1:05.24; Justin Chiaravelle taking fourth in the 60m hurdles in 8.76s; Matt Kaftanski placing seventh in the 1000m in personal record time of 2:32.44; Zack Price taking seventh in the 5000m in personal record time of 15:34.56; the 4 x 400m relay team taking fifth in 3:31.57 and the 4 x 800m relay squad (Matt Meehan, Vuckovic, Matt Kaiser and Kaftanski) grabbing fifth in 7:55.33.
On the women's side, points came from field and track performances alike.
Top amongst the performances was put in by sophomore Malin Marmbrandt, who won the triple jump with a mark of 11.78 and took third place in the long jump with a leap of 5.62m.
Other highlights of the women's performances included a third, fifth and eighth place finish in the mile (Jelena Rankovic taking third in 5:04.70; Sarah Rogers placing fifth in a personal record of 5:07.91 and Eryka Perrault finishing eighth in 5:15. Rogers then took second in the 3000m in another personal record time of 10:15.00 with teammate Erin Kennedy placing sixth in that event in 10:48.46.
Additionally, in the women's shot put, Marina Vojinovic garnered second place honors with a mark of 14.23m and Ana Ugarkovic taking fourth in that event with a toss of 11.51m.
